The Church and School of Wicca's Masthead

Our Essential Witchcraft Correspondence Course

The basic correspondence course outlined below will give you a thorough grounding in today's Wicca and will help you understand its underlying mind set. Successful completion is a prerequisite to some of the more advanced courses taught by the Church and School of Wicca. Other courses can be taken without having taken this course first.

If you are under 18 and reading this page, we do suggest that you review this with a parent. Please take a look at the Natural Wicca Survey course instead of the Essential or Basic Witchcraft course. Thank you.

The course in Essential Witchcraft consists of an introductory (written) lecture and twelve further lectures. All study material is extensively illustrated; it is written in language that is easy to understand, and over the more than thirty years of the School's life has been constantly revised with the help of student feedback.

The lectures are mailed to you by snail-mail in plain envelopes. If you decide to try to qualify for Initiation (that is your own personal decision), then you will need to read outside books. The School conducts a lending library to help you obtain those titles.

The Roots of Our Teachings

The belief system of the Church and School is based not on one tradition but on a composite system of spiritual and magical beliefs that rests firmly on five supports. The system has Celtic undertones just because of our personal heritage, but other ethnic flavors are apparent as well. The five supports are:

     1. The old masters and new texts: Literally thousands of old texts have been studied by at least 50,000 members of the School's student body. People in our groups can read hieroglyphics, cuneiform, ogham, and other ancient scripts. We have people who are acknowledged experts in biblical lore and in Judaism. In modern languages too we are second to none.  Take a look at a listing of the books we use in conjunction with this course here.

    2. Modern experimental work: With hundreds of new students joining each month, we are able to research different ways. We do not believe that our path is the only path; instead we encourage experimentation. Then the students report back their experiences. When a sufficient body of data has been accumulated, the belief system is modified.

    3. Research into modern remnants of primitive cultures: especially Native American, though also Eskimo, Hopi, Australian Aborigine, Brazilian rain forest cultures, and those of New Guinea. This is an ever-expanding area, as is the newer science of social anthropology which forms the basis for parts of the course.

     4. Family Traditions: Gavin's own fragmentary family tradition was passed down in South Wales. His great-great-grandfather was deported to Australia with the famous Welsh healer Dr. Price, but both were pardoned by Queen Victoria. How much farther back the tradition goes is unknown, but that matters little now. Only small portions of the tradition remain in the course, because it was simply too chauvinistic to pass muster in today's society. The Church is not a dinosaur, unable to adapt; it is a vital, growing, dynamic entity.

     5. Students and other Wiccans and Pagans: Gradually the School has been discovered by other Pagans and Wiccans who want more from their religion than a chance to get laid, or dancing in the dewy grass, or substituting a female for a male deity. These people have done their own experimenting, and many share results with us so that all students can benefit from their experience. Some traditions have been passed down in families and are part of current Craft practice. Most of them go back only to the late 19th century or the early 20th century.

Course Synopsis

Upon completion of the Essential Witchcraft course, you will have working knowledge of Celtic Witchcraft. The course is complete in itself. It consists of twelve lessons which will teach you all about:

 Rituals                                      Spells
 Sabbats                                     Esbats
 Rites of Passage                       Reincarnation
 Fertility Magic                         Wiccan Tools
Developing Psychic Power      Prayers and Incantations
The Coven                               Wicca and Good Health
 Telepathy                                 Forming Your Own
                                                         Coven
 Psychic Healing                       Clairvoyance
 Herbal Healing                         Clairsentience
 Prediction                                 Clairaudience
 Harmony   Magick                    Initiation

Many students of the School choose to study solely for intellectual and philosophical enlightenment -- for self-enrichment -- and do not intend to become practicing Witches. All seekers are welcome.

When you complete the course, you will receive either a Certificate of Completion or (if you are invited to be Initiated) a Doctorate of Celtic Wicca. It's a proud moment when you hang it on your wall.

This unique, exciting, empowering course will give you far more than you can learn from books or individual instruction or a couple of days in a seminar, because no one else has the empirical knowledge contained in the course. We have worked with hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world. We have lived the tenets of the Craft day and night for a cumulative total of more than eighty years. We have fought the battles. We were Witches when it was neither healthful nor fashionable to do so.

If you are fortunate enough to find a group, the knowledge in this course will help you both to evaluate the group and (we hope) to move the group along to new planes of understanding. Remember: Gurus are people too. When you take this course, your guru is in the form of inanimate lectures. Those lectures have no personal ax to grind, and you can review them as many times as you like. Perhaps even more importantly, you can ask questions and get answers from two acknowledged leaders of the Craft.

Taking the Course

I have received my introductory packet. Where is my next lecture?
You must send in your answered questionnaire and your tuition payment to receive your next lecture.

What am I paying for?
You are paying for a one-year and one-day study period. Until you send in each answered questionnaire, you will not receive the next lecture.

How do I obtain a refund?
Within 30 days of your registration, please send in a certified letter requesting your refund. This is only for the amount you may have paid above and beyond your $10 non-refundable registration fee.

I have registered for the course and have not heard from you. What do I do now?
For reasons unknown to us, we receive around 10% of the actual registrations sent to the School. To make sure your information is received, please print out the registration form and mail it to us through the postal service. While this may take longer, it is more likely to be received in Hinton than over the Internet. You may fax and confirm your registration to 1-304-466-1518. Thank you.

How do I get my questions answered?
Please send a donation to your teacher along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. The School is a not-for-profit organization and does not have the necessary resources to reply to every question a person may have. Questions asked along with regular lecture correspondence will be answered as Gavin and Yvonne are able.
